A Rich History
Gatehouse Winery's story dates back to 1802, when Reverend McClain purchased the property and established a 100+ acre farm and mission post. The historic stone house overlooking the winery was constructed by Reverend McClain and a group of skilled Virginia carpenters, using timber hewn from trees harvested right on the property.
Around the time of the Great Depression, the property was purchased by the Jamison family, who continued its legacy as a working farm. After the original barn was lost to fire in the 1940s, the Jamisons purchased a nearby barn from a local family and carefully relocated it to the property. That same barn still stands today and serves as the home of Gatehouse Winery.
From its early beginnings as a mission farm to its present-day role as a gathering place for wine, events, and community celebrations, the property remains a treasured piece of Greenville's history.
